Project Description

Program Title: Squamish I (ESS-03)

Squamish I is the third program in a progression aimed at introducing young people to the spectacular natural environments to which we in Southwest BC are fortunate enough to have access.  We will help students to experience the continuity and transitions in and on the landscapes as we expand our range north up Howe Sound.  We will be traveling on the well-maintained, yet challenging, Stawamus Chief Provincial Park trails as we hike to the top of the iconic Stawamus Chief Mountain.  Stopping along the hike up ‘the Chief’ and from the spectacular vistas atop the summit, participants will learn about the region and it’s history in a fun and social atmosphere that encourages questions, exploration, and interactive activities.

ADD ON: Upon request, this day can be modified to include the following:

  • a tour of Britannia Mine Museum, one of the top attractions in all of BC and a wonderful teaching/learning venue.  Hours require adjustment to accommodate.
  • an overnight campout at Stawamus Chief Provincial Park.

Duration: 1 Day (8:30am – 5:30pm)

Objectives:

  1. To expand through firsthand experience our understanding of the Sea-to-Sky region, inparticular how the ecology, setting, and geography of the mountainous forests of coastal BC connect, transform, and influence the societies that have long called them home.
  2. To connect students to the places in which, and near to where, they live so that they might foster an appreciation for the land and other communities.
  3. To have fun and get physical in a natural playground that inspires active and experiential learning.
